Reparations in Public Space

In partnership with Creative Urban Alchemy, we begin an exploration of reimagining sites of trauma in NYC (The African Burial Grounds in central Brooklyn), to transform land into healing spaces. “Liberation is a spatial practice.” Mario Gooden – Dark Space

This is about taking up space. This is about healing. This is about declaring Black Lives as safe and sacred.

AS FEATURED IN

Body is.

The American ritual is the denigration of the Black body. Black Exhale is about Black people collectively embodying and releasing their rage and grief, unearthing their joy; and allies increasing their capacity to be a witness—being unobtrusively present—in that process.

I write the Black female body and am always looking at how/where trauma sits in our bodies, and how we can find safety for ourselves corporeally. I teach writing at Columbia, Narrative Medicine at CUNY School of Medicine, and have a TEDx (Death by Chocolate Cyst) that explores the intersectionality of medical invisibility in a Black female body.
